Утренняя сводка новостей

Dear Friends -

Quite possibly, now that this rather long first week is coming to an end, my updates will become more sporadic.

Updates:
1. My father’s condition continues to remain stable – which, with each progressive day, is a more and more optimistic sign.
2. His kidneys seem to be doing a little better, and the lungs are doing OK. However, as expected, there are more infections. For this reason, he has on various antibiotics. Additionally, he had surgery this evening to remove some necrotic tissue from his leg and place a skin graft to reduce infection. Some is his own skin; some from the skin bank. G-d willing, in another week or two, he will need more plastic surgery on the leg.
3. No doubt, says the doctor, the reason why his leg was not completely mangled was very much due to the fact that he has incredibly strong leg muscles… a direct result of biking, of course.
4. His neck brace was removed tonight as well. Thank G-d, his neck and spine are in one piece. The CT of the brain also shows nothing that should be construed as troubling.

In the coming days (it’s nice to start looking at things more than one day at a time), it seems that:
1. He will certainly remain intubated and in induced coma – for his own good.
2. His temperature will flare up occasionally, for any of a variety of reasons
3. No surgery will be required / initiated. Hopefully, these will be the days of progressive stabilization, and getting out of the danger zone.

As response to some questions that I received:
1. How’s Rimma (aka Musya) – his mother / my grandmother – doing? She is as strong as they get. Truly. Must be something in the genes of the 90+ year old Russian women. Seems that they have seen a thing or two in their lives. Since the first night when we woke her up and brought her to the hospital to say potential goodbyes, she has spent hours each day with us in the hospital. Never flinching. Not once.

2. Can blood be donated in regular MADA stations in Jerusalem? Yes. The blood will be donated by MADA to Hadassah if you take a “shovar” from them stating that it’s for filling the reserves in the name of David Kazhdan, teudat zehut 326936903. Please send the “shovar” to the בנק הדם in Hadassah Ein Kerem, or place it in my parents mailbox – 38/1 Rahel Imenu. THANK YOU VERY MUCH to those of you who have already donated the blood.

3. What specifically should we be praying for? According to the doctor – and I sort of like his definition: that the complications that are expected to appear in the coming days and weeks should be staggered; not simultaneous. Let the body fight – and beat – one challenge at a time.

With many thanks for all of your ongoing support,
The Kazhdans
