Democracy (the most abused word these days) is not just about thrusting a piece of paper into a box once in every so many years. Without the readiness to accept the resuls and, most important, to face the consequences, the voting becomes just another LJ poll "what flower you are". In 2001 Israelis chose the "war criminal" Sharon fully aware that the "international community" may ostracize the country for such choice (as many pundits hysterically predicted; the fact that this did not happen is attesting only to the toothless nature of this "community"). All the way around the fact that Russians voted in so incredible numbers for Zhirinovsky during the early nineties shows that the democracy in Russia was an alien concept for a large part (if not overwhelming majority) of the population.

So much about forcing the democracy on the Arab world, election of HAMAS to power and the declaration on "necessity to respect the free and democratic choice of the Palestinian people". Those who sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas.
