The "Commentary" of "Iran Daily" on why Iran needs the nuke...

End of Nuclear Apartheid

By Mohammad Reza Erfanian

Iran joined the global nuclear club on Tuesday. This momentous development is not only a source of glory for the nation, but it also marks the end of nuclear apartheid. The success in enriching uranium for civilian use puts a permanent end to the unacceptable nuclear monopoly, which the big powers have insisted on for over half a century to protect their self-interests. Taking a major step forward in the complicated scientific and technological process is a great accomplishment for the nation and also the international community. Science and knowledge is a blessing that must be available to the entire human race. No big or small power has the right to deprive others from technological advancement under any pretext. As such, access to peaceful nuclear technology akin to other scientific progress, is the right of all nations. Today the free world with thousands of years of history and civilization is unwilling to tolerate curbs or conditions on access to science and technology. In the not too distant past, big power policies were mostly biased and racist. Awkward as it may seem, they regarded some human races as more superior than others! Thus, it was little surprise that the comity of nations over the past half-century encountered problems emanating from scientific monopolies. Great powers in the past did everything possible to dominate scientific and technological advancement in a bid to dictate their terms to weaker nations. Iran’s access to nuclear technology will gradually help put an end to such ugly practices. This latest access to master the nuclear fuel-cycle not only made our people happy, but also jubilation among the advocates of the Islamic state on the regional and global levels.

From the outset Iran emphasized that uranium enrichment is geared in its entirety to producing electricity. In the past three years, to show its goodwill and improve transparency of its scientific activities, Iran has collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Proof to substantiate this oft-declared position, is that IAEA inspectors have visited our nuclear sites much too often and at their own discretion. Iran’s access to a complete nuclear fuel cycle coincided with the presence of IAEA experts who for years have closely scrutinized all nuclear activities. To further improve transparency and build trust, Tehran held talks with several western states and upon their request voluntarily suspended enrichment activities. Despite such painful and costly moves, Iran received illogical, biased and illegal response from the west demanding that it reverse its nuclear program for good and kiss uranium enrichment goodbye. The nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), to which Iran is a signatory, accords all members the right to employ nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, of course including possession of the fuel cycle for atomic power plants. Mastering nuclear technology is a national demand and the ’red line’ no authority can afford to ignore. Those familiar with ancient Iranian culture and history know that whenever Iranians faced foreign pressure they closed ranks. Factors contributing to our national might include Islamic identity and abiding by its cardinal values that underwrite intellectualism, innovation and dynamism. Scientific progress is a fundamental pillar of national might and the sine qua non for advancement in other key areas. With this goal our people are determined to attain more glory, defend national sovereignty, and live in a prosperous, strong and responsible country. Iranians consider the drive toward advancement irreversible and believe they must challenge and reverse the mounting pressures from foreign powers with national resolve and unity of purpose.

One main objective of the US and its allies in strongly opposing Iran’s undeniable right to scientific and technological advancement is to deprive the nation from reaching the zenith of economic progress and development. The Leader made specific reference to this covert western agenda in his recent meeting with the Iranian diplomatic corps. Iran for years agreed to voluntary measures and moratoriums with regard to its nuclear program when many nuclear powers, including the US make a mockery of the NPT and continue to arm lawless and dangerous regimes, such as Israel with nuclear weapons and in the process endangers global peace and security. America and countries like India, which are not members of NPT, do not want international institutions to monitor their nuclear activities and even ridicule related conventions. As senior officials of many countries have reiterated, Iranians are still open to negotiations but will not tolerate politicization of their legitimate rights. The door is open for removing ambiguities and find a logical solution to the dispute through diplomacy.
